Aston Villa were left frustrated after being held to a 0-0 draw against Burnley in the Premier League on Thursday night.

The home side dominated for long spells at Villa Park, and they hit the woodwork twice in the first half through Anwar El Ghazi and Kortney Hause.

El Ghazi had a number of chances to win it in the second half while Bertrand Traoré also went close as Villa searched in vain for a winner.

The stalemate was Villa’s first draw of the league season, leaving them sat in 11th place in the table.

Dean Smith made four changes to his starting XI from the team that beat Wolves, with three of those enforced by injury and suspension.

But despite the changes, the home side made a fast start and saw Traoré flash a half-volley narrowly wide with four minutes on the clock.

Having dominated the early stages, Burnley nearly struck a sucker punch when former Villan Ashley Westwood skimmed the far post with a first-time effort.

Clarets striker Chris Wood had scored in all of his previous three starts against Villa, and he nearly continued that record with a back post header that was well saved by Emiliano Martinez.

As the game reached the 30-minute mark, a goal nearly arrived from the right boot of Ahmed Elmohamady, with his shot taking two deflections before being cleared off the line by Matt Lowton.

El Ghazi was the hero on Saturday and only a combination of Nick Pope’s fingertips and the crossbar stopped him scoring a stunning, curling free-kick as the game approached half-time.

The woodwork thwarted Villa once again before the break, with Hause’s header cannoning off the post as he rose to meet a corner.

Making his first Premier League start of the season, El Ghazi looked desperate to make an impact, and he curled the ball narrowly wide of the target with a wicked effort after 55 minutes.

The winger had a further three shots on goal without success as he and Jack Grealish linked up time and again.

Martinez had been a bystander for most of the second half, but he had to react sharply to deny Ben Mee as the Burnley skipper swivelled and slapped a shot on target in the 72nd minute.

Keinan Davis was introduced as Smith went for a winner, but it was centre-back Tyrone Mings who came close to a breakthrough, nodding a header a yard wide.

Villa skipper Grealish was next to try his luck, jinking his way past a couple of Burnley players before firing over from the edge of the box as Villa fell short in their attempts to find a goal.
