Aston Villa came from behind to take a point against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge as Anwar El Ghazi continued his hot streak.

The winger scored his fifth goal in as many games, turning home Matty Cash’s cross to level the scores after 50 minutes.

John McGinn struck the crossbar with a long-range piledriver before substitute Jacob Ramsey came close to curling in a winner as Villa extended their unbeaten run to five games.

Olivier Giroud had earlier given the home side the lead in a thrilling Premier League contest that was end-to-end throughout.

Villa started the game looking for a sixth win in seven away league matches, and they made a bright start when Jack Grealish drifted inside and stung the palms of Edouard Mendy with a low drive.

The England midfielder then turned provider for Chelsea as his wayward pass was pounced upon by Christian Pulisic, who beat Ezri Konsa before slamming the ball into the side netting.

Despite Chelsea making six changes to Villa’s one from their Boxing Day exertions, the visitors looked sharper and were having the better of possession, chances and territory.

And the away side should have hit the front when Cash blazed over from inside the area after 30 minutes.

Chelsea made Villa pay for that miss when Giroud finished off a flowing team move with a diving header from Ben Chilwell’s cross - the first goal Villa had conceded in over seven hours of football.

The goal turned the tide of the game in the hosts’ favour, with Mason Mount spurning a golden chance to double the lead before half-time.

Villa came out of the traps flying when the second half got underway, pulling themselves level minutes after the restart when El Ghazi struck Cash’s deep cross through Mendy’s legs.

The sides were taking it in turns to stream forward at a relentless tempo, with tackles flying in and chances at both ends.

Antonio Rudiger had a goal disallowed for offside while McGinn rattled the crossbar with a thunderbolt from distance.

Ramsey was introduced with just under ten minutes left on the clock, and the youngster nearly scored with his first few touches as he sent a curling effort inches wide.

Chelsea piled the pressure on as the match ticked towards its conclusion, and Ben Chilwell nearly broke Villa’s resistance in injury-time with a superb volley that flashed past the far post.
