Midlands media and Acorns have honoured a much-loved sports broadcaster who sadly passed away in late October.
Linda O’Brien covered the region’s clubs, including Aston Villa, for several years, working for ITV, Sky Sports and most recently Premier League Productions (PLP).
She was a genuine, caring, kind, thoughtful and selfless person who was well respected as a reporter and left a positive, upbeat impression upon everyone she met.
It was with great sadness that Linda passed away having battled cancer for a second time.
Local journalists wanted to pay tribute to Linda’s memory and raised money which was split between Villa and others.
Our donation from media went to Acorns Children’s Hospice, who honoured Linda with her name on a star upon their Christmas tree as a thank you gesture.
Dave Armitage, midlands reporter for the Daily Star, on behalf of everyone who contributed, said: “The brighter the star, the longer the shadow and Linda's passing leaves a real sense of darkness with all of those who knew her.
“A more selfless person I have yet to meet. She was always concerned about others, always willing to help out when she could.
“That wasn't an act, she was just the same when she was fighting her battle with illness so bravely.
“She never really let on when I'm sure there were dark times and she had every reason to curse her luck. But I never heard it.
“Saying the chemo made her tired was about as near as I ever heard her get to a grumble.
“She really will be sorely missed both professionally and personally.
“There will be a star with her name on it on the Christmas tree at the Acorns Hospice this year.
“It would be nice to think she'd see it, but I suspect she would just slap you playfully on the shoulder and chuckle: 'You shouldn't have!'
“Bless her, she was a true star.”
