Anwar El Ghazi revealed he was full of confidence as he stepped up to convert the injury-time penalty that secured derby delight against Wolves.

The Dutchman had only been introduced as a 75th-minute substitute at Molinuex, his fourth Premier League appearance of the season off the bench.

But, after John McGinn was felled in the area deep into added time, El Ghazi immediately showed no hesitation and displayed courage aplenty to take the ball and subsequently send Rui Patricio the wrong way from the spot – sealing Aston Villa’s 1-0 victory.

Speaking to VillaTV post-match, he said: “I think it was between Ollie (Watkins) and Jack (Grealish).

“I had a lot of confidence because I do it a lot in training, I always try to do some extra shooting drills and some penalties.

“I was really confident about myself so I thought ‘I’m going to take it’.

“And I’m happy Jack gave it to me, it shows he’s a really good guy and he has a good heart.

“I’m happy to be important.”

El Ghazi added: “I’m very happy, we are all happy, everyone who loves Aston Villa is happy.

“Especially for me, I’m not playing much at the moment and it’s always good to come on and be important for the team.

“So I will sleep good tonight.”
