Matt Targett feels Aston Villa’s defensive strength this season is down to a collective team effort.
Dean Smith’s side have recorded seven clean sheets in the Premier League so far this term, more than any other side, despite having played two games fewer than most.
They have also conceded just 13 times in those 12 games, a record which only Manchester City (12) can better.
And left-back Targett, one of six players to have started each of the club’s league fixtures this season, feels those defensive plaudits should be shared throughout the team.
“I just think the whole team is much better set up,” he told VillaTV, speaking ahead of the club’s Boxing Day clash against Crystal Palace.
“We know defensively as a unit it starts from Ollie up front, he’s been fantastic since he joined, he works so hard.
“And then the midfield from behind, we’re not giving teams much space to play.
“I think that makes such a big difference.”

Targett has been in impressive form this term and admits he has looked to add greater consistency to his game for his own personal development.
“Last season, I don’t think I was consistent enough,” he said.
“But this season I think I’ve grown in each game. And when you come up against the likes of Adama Traore and different wingers like that, I love those challenges.
“And I just want to prove to everyone that I can handle players like that and put on a good performance.”
Matt also discusses last Sunday’s win over West Brom, the squad’s strength in depth, last season’s crucial victory over Palace and the absence of the Villa faithful on Boxing Day.
