Gemma Davies said she was 'pleased to top' Group A in the FA Continental League Cup on Thursday.

Aston Villa Women went into their fixture against Durham knowing a draw would be enough to send the tie into a winner-takes-all penalty shootout.

They managed just that, albeit late on, when Emma Follis banged home a free-kick with 15 minutes remaining to level the scores at 1-1.

Stine Larsen had missed a spot-kick in normal time, but wasn't to be denied in the shootout.

Nadine Hanssen, Caro Siems and Nat Haigh all buried their respective kicks, while Sian Rogers pulled off several fantastic saves to send Villa through to the quarter-finals.

Speaking to VillaTV after the game, Davies expressed her pleasure in seeing her side's personality come to the fore in the second half.

โ€œWeโ€™re pleased to top the group and go through, especially off the back of the disappointment on Saturday" Davies said.

"Weโ€™ve still got to make improvements.

"In the first half, Durham had the better of us.

"We struggled to match them in areas that we needed to.

"But I felt we gave a really good reaction in the second half, and you saw more of our personality.โ€
