Frustration was the overriding feeling for Dean Smith after Aston Villa fell to a 2-1 defeat against Brighton.
The hosts enjoyed more possession, twice as many shots and nine more corners than the Seagulls, but they were unable to convert their statistical dominance into a positive result.
Smith’s frustration was compounded in stoppage time when referee Michael Oliver overturned his decision to award a penalty for a foul on Trezeguet.

The head coach said: “I think anywhere else on the pitch it’s a free-kick. VAR’s told the referee to go to the monitor and he’s overturned it, so there’s nothing we can do.
“It’s frustrating. I’m not sure many of us know what is a penalty and what isn’t at the moment.
“I was more frustrated by the fact we had some big chances today and we didn’t take them. We weren’t at our blistering best by any means, but we weren’t bad.
“We created a number of chances that we should have taken and if we’d have done that, we’d have won the game.”
While Villa have won all three of their Premier League away games this season, the team have found life tougher on home soil.

After wins against Fulham and Liverpool, Smith’s team have now lost their last three league matches at Villa Park – something which the head coach knows is not good enough.
He said: “We got a great start to the second half and I thought we were on top after the goal. I think tiredness kicked in 15 minutes into the second half.
“They went and got a goal that was poor from our point of view. We’ve conceded too many goals at home.
“I still believe that the Southampton game was a freak game. In my opinion, the only team that’s deserved to beat us here is Leeds.
“Today, we never should have lost the game. I’m disappointed, and we need to be better at home.”
