Proud Dean Smith hailed his Aston Villa side for their “outstanding” performance and work-rate as they registered a memorable 7-2 triumph over Liverpool.

Ollie Watkins hit a first-half hat-trick, Jack Grealish bagged a brace and both John McGinn and Ross Barkley found the net as Villa put in a stunning performance to record a famous result against the reigning Premier League champions.

It ensures in-form Villa have won their opening three league fixtures for the first time since 1962/63.

Asked how he summed up what was an incredible night, Smith told VillaTV: “Outstanding.

“I’m so, so proud of the players, they executed the gameplan to perfection.

“They showed quality, but my biggest pleasure was the work-rate.

“If you get out-worked by Liverpool, you get beat. They’re an exceptional team.

“When somebody like Jurgen Klopp at the end of the game says ‘wow’ to you, you know you’ve done something special.

“And that was a special performance.

“The problem for the lads now is I’ll be expecting it all the time!

“It was a wow factor, there wasn’t anybody out there who didn’t dig deep and put in a real shift.”
