Dean Smith was left “disappointed and frustrated” after Aston Villa’s late 2-1 defeat to Liverpool.

Ollie Watkins’ first-half strike was cancelled out by Mohamed Salah’s header just before the hour mark.

The encounter looked set to finish honours even until Trent Alexander-Arnold’s 91st-minute strike inflicted an injury-time reverse.

Liverpool v Aston Villa

Speaking after the late heartbreak at Anfield, head coach Smith told VillaTV: “A very frustrating one.

“I didn’t think we were good in the first 30 minutes, especially, we certainly helped Liverpool to some chances with us giving the ball away in our defending third, our build-up wasn’t good enough.

“But we took the lead.

“So it was a first half where we’ve been by far the second-best team in the match and we go in 1-0.

“Second half I thought there was a vast improvement in terms of our build-up and how we wanted to go and hurt Liverpool and we asked questions of them, but we didn’t make the most of our opportunities in the second half.

“We ultimately lost the second half 2-0 and that’s what is the crazy game of football, sometimes you can score when you’re not at your best and be leading and concede when you’re playing a lot better.

“Disappointed and frustrated.”
