Aston Villa begin their Carabao Cup campaign at the Dunes Hotel Stadium on Tuesday night, taking on League Two side Barrow.

It will be the first time the two clubs have ever played a competitive game, with a place in the third round up for grabs.

Dean Smith’s men head north with a first Premier League win of the season under their belts following a 2-0 success against Newcastle United on Saturday.

Barrow, led by Mark Cooper, have started the campaign with one win, one draw and two defeats in four league games.

The Bluebirds beat Scunthorpe United 1-0 in the first round of this competition, thanks to a goal from former Villa youngster Dimitri Sea.

League Cup Credentials

Villa made the final of the competition in 2019/20 before reaching the last-16 last term, losing to Stoke City at Villa Park.

The club have won the League Cup on five occasions, with our last triumph in 1996.

Opponents Barrow didn’t compete in the League Cup between 1972 and 2020 as they bounced around non-league before winning the National League in 2019/20.

On their return to the competition, Championship side Derby County beat them on penalties after a 0-0 draw in round one.

Barrow’s best performance in the competition is reaching the third round in 1962/63 and 1967/68.

Dean Smith is hoping to have Ollie Watkins available for Saturday’s Premier League game versus Brentford, while Leon Bailey is dealing with a hamstring issue.

Bertrand Traore is out until after the international break, while Trezeguet is a long-term absentee.

Barrow are likely to be missing former Villa Academy player Dimitri Sea, while Matty Platt is recovering from a back problem.

Mike Jones, Jamie and Tom Beadling are also out.
