Dean Smith was pleased to see his Aston Villa team battle for a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at Villa Park.

Danny Ings marked his home debut with a stunning bicycle kick just before the break, before Anwar El Ghazi wrapped up the points from the spot in the second half.

Smith is still looking for improvements in terms of performance, but he was satisfied with the scoreline.

Speaking to VillaTV, he said: "It wasn't a brilliant performance by any stretch of the imagination, but it was a really good result.

"It's always important to get that first win, especially at home and it was nice to battle to get that win."

Villa Park was full for the first time since February 2020 and the Villa boss was delighted to deliver three points for the supporters.

He said: "It was brilliant, they have waited a long time for this.

"They certainly make themselves felt around the place and the intensity levels were certainly better today with the supporters here.

"It's great to get the three points, especially in front of our own fans."
