Aston Villa and Wolves played out a goalless derby encounter during which the woodwork was hit three times.

Ollie Watkins rattled the crossbar with a thunderous long-range strike early on before Ezri Konsa did likewise from six yards, with Villa having hit the goalframe 14 times this season and Watkins accounting for seven of those, as the hosts dominated the first half.

It was a different story after the break, however, as Wolves captain Conor Coady headed against a post and Romain Saiss somehow sent the rebound over from merely a yard out.

Emi Martinez then produced a superb save to deny Coady from close range and ensure the clash finished honours even and the spoils were shared.

It sealed a 14th clean sheet in the Premier League this season, with Watkins denied by Rui Patricio in injury time and Konsa subsequently firing off target.

Villa started on the front foot and Watkins struck the crossbar from distance early on, before Konsa did the same from close range after 15 minutes as Bertrand Traore’s cross evaded everyone in the penalty area.

An energetic Villa took the game to Wanderers in the opening half an hour but just couldn’t find the crucial breakthrough, with neither side managing a shot on target during a lively opening 45 minutes.

Watkins saw his attempted shot blocked at the start of the second half and, from the resulting corner, the visitors launched a counter-attack which resulted in Pedro Neto racing Matt Targett down the left channel and forcing a smart save from Martinez.

Villa were fortunate to still be on level terms in the 57th minute as an unmarked Coady sent a header against the inside of the back post, and Saiss then sent the rebound over the crossbar from a central position just a yard out.

Head coach Smith turned to Ross Barkley after the hour mark, with Wolves dominating proceedings in the second period.

Martinez came to Villa’s rescue with a superb reaction save to deny Coady from close range in the 76th minute after Willian Jose’s shot fell into the path of the defender.

The home side almost claimed all three points in injury time but Watkins saw his strike blocked by Patricio and Konsa sent the rebound wide.
