With a productive season done and dusted, here's their look back at how the campaign unfolded in fantasy football...

Aston Villa ended the 2020/21 season on a high, with a brace of wins against two top-seven clubs. In their Gameweek 38 victory over Chelsea, Dean Smith's side cemented a fantastic Premier League campaign and rewarded FPL managers who invested in the Villans with a final flurry of points.

Villa were joint-ninth across the division for goals scored this season (55), sixth for goal attempts (520), fifth for shots in the box (344) and sixth for efforts on target (183).

Ollie Watkins (£6.3m) and Anwar El Ghazi (£5.2m) both hit double figures for goals scored, with Watkins' tally of 14 enough to see him finish eighth in the top goalscorer charts.

Watkins’ first season in the Premier League was an unmitigated success as he also chipped in with nine assists and 18 bonus points, taking his total FPL score to 168 - that was more than the likes of Andrew Robertson (£7.3m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.8m) and Ilkay Gundogan (£5.5m) managed.

Captain Jack Grealish (£7.5m) was joint-fourth for FPL assists, meanwhile, and his tally of 12 was made all the more impressive given that he only played in 26 of a possible 38 matches this season. Grealish was also third for chances created, with 81.

Watkins and Grealish have been incredibly popular FPL assets this season, with the former owned by 22.1% of FPL managers in Gameweek 38 and the latter by 14.6%.

And let's not forget Bertrand Traore's (£5.8m) contribution, with the winger matching Grealish's FPL points total of 135.

But Aston Villa’s appeal to FPL managers was not restricted to their attacking assets in 2020/21. Villa were joint-seventh for fewest goals conceded (46), while their impressive total of 15 clean sheets was bettered only by champions Manchester City and Chelsea.

Emi Martinez's (£5.3m) move from Arsenal couldn’t have gone better for both Aston Villa and FPL managers alike. Martinez finished the season with 186 FPL points, the highest tally of any goalkeeper. It also made him Villa’s top FPL scorer for the season.

Jack Grealish

Martinez made 142 stops and could boast one of the division's best save percentages (76.3%), so it was no surprise that he ended the campaign as the most highly owned FPL goalkeeper.

Alongside Martinez, the reliable trio of Matt Targett (£5.0m), Tyrone Mings (£5.4m) and Ezri Konsa (£4.6m) ended the season in the top 20 defenders for points scored.

Konsa and Mings both chipped in with two goals, with Mings adding two assists for good measure. Targett also created four of Villa's strikes, with his total of 15 clean sheets beaten only by Ruben Dias (£5.9m) among fantasy defenders.

One key reason why the Villans were so attractive to FPL managers this season was the reliability of appearances, with head coach Smith making the second-fewest number of changes to his line-up across the league. This makes great reading for FPL managers, who can be confident in starts for their FPL assets.

After a superb 2020/21 campaign, the likes of Watkins, Grealish, Martinez and the Villa defence, among others, all look likely to be popular picks for FPL managers come Gameweek 1 of the new season.
