Captain Tyrone Mings admitted the manner in which Aston Villa conceded three late goals against Wolves hurt the most and they must learn the lessons from Saturday’s defeat.

The Villans were firmly in command with 10 minutes remaining of the derby encounter at Villa Park after Danny Ings and John McGinn had established a 2-0 lead.

Yet Villa suffered heartbreak as Romain Saiss and Conor Coady levelled matters late on before Ruben Neves’ deflected free-kick in the 95th minute ensured Wanderers inflicted a dramatic 3-2 reverse.

Speaking to VillaTV post-match, Mings said: “We threw it away, they didn’t have to do too much for their goals, which is probably why it’s so disappointing.

“It’s a game we were controlling, a game we were in control of, and the manner of the goals probably hurts the most.

“We have been good at defending set-pieces, second-phase set-pieces all season, but here we weren’t, and set-pieces are a huge part of the game.

“We know how important they have been for our season so far in terms of picking up points and here it was a case of we dropped points from set-pieces.

“Like I say, the manner of the goals probably hurts the most.”

Villa will be looking to get back on track against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Friday.

And skipper Mings insists a hurting Villa have to learn the lessons from Saturday’s loss and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“We have to learn from the position we were in, we were controlling the game, we were 2-0 up with 15 minutes to go so to throw it away was almost amateurish, I think,” he said.

“They’re a great set of lads in there, honest set of lads, and we have to learn very quickly as, like I say, set-pieces are so important in the game we’re playing today when you’re at the top level and games are tight.

“We can’t concede goals in the way we did, but we’ve got such a great group of lads in there, such an honest group of lads who want to learn and get better all the time.

“It will hurt, and it does hurt, it hurts everybody in there at the moment, obviously we know what these sort of games mean to the fans as well, so we know it will be hurting them just as much as it hurts us.”
