Aston Villa progressed into the second round of the Birmingham Senior Cup courtesy of a 6-2 triumph at Coventry Sphinx.

Villa took a firm hold of the tie early on and held a commanding 4-0 lead against Sphinx.

The hosts reduced the arrears before the Young Lions added a further two strikes after the break, with the home side adding a consolation to wrap up the scoring.

Tristan Abldeen-Goodridge broke the deadlock courtesy of a superb counter-attack, which started with goalkeeper Oliwier Zych clearing the danger from a corner and finished with the striker knocking the ball around his man on the halfway line, racing clear and coolly slotting home.

The visitors soon established a 2-0 lead after winning possession in a dangerous area, Finley Thorndike feeding Trialist and he slotted home.

Trialist added his second with a well-taken finish having been sent through by Abldeen-Goodridge, before Taylor-Jay Hart latched on to Tim Iroegbunam’s defence-splitting pass to slot home a fourth.

Sphinx pulled a goal back before Villa added a fifth, Iroegbunam claiming his second assist of the night to set up Trialist, who showed patience and composure to slot home and claim his hat-trick.

Substitute Kahrel Reddin added a sixth in style as he took a short corner, beat three defenders and fired home from 15 yards.

The home side rounded off the scoring but it was Villa’s Young Lions who booked their place in the next round of the Birmingham Senior Cup.
