Dean Smith has confirmed that Leon Bailey will be sidelined with a thigh strain until after the October international break.

The Jamaican international lit up Villa Park with his cameo performance that helped Villa to a 3-0 win last weekend before leaving the field early through injury.

Bailey has now been assessed by the medical staff and is targeting a return to action against Wolverhampton Wanderers next month.

Dean Smith said: “Leon has a strain which is likely to keep him out until after the international break. We would be hopeful that he would be available for the Wolves game but we will need to assess him nearer the time and see how he progresses over the next ten days or so.”

The Head Coach also confirmed that Morgan Sanson will be ruled out for around a month after picking up a hamstring strain against Chelsea last night.

“He just felt a twinge in his hamstring,” Smith explained. “We don’t believe it’s going to be a bad one, he actually carried on for two or three minutes after which proves to me it’s not a bad one. It’s just he felt the twinge and knew it was time to get off.

“He’s been missing for the last three or four months with a knee injury and he’s worked really hard to get back to full fitness. He was building up his game minutes, so really frustrated for him but it will only be a small step backwards, that’s for sure.”

Smith went on to reflect on last night’s Carabao Cup exit and was proud of his team’s performance. “I thought it was a really good game to watch,” he said. “The team we picked was capable of winning, needed minutes and competed really well against very good opposition.

“I thought we created the better chances in the game.

“I know Werner’s had one after they scored and Mount’s had one late on, but we’ve had a number of chances with Cameron having a couple, Emi Buendía having one, Jaden Bidace having one, Anwar El Ghazi having one.

“We created the better chances on the night and we’re disappointed that we didn’t go through but, all in all, we certainly can’t squeeze any more out of them, I’m really proud of the way they performed and played.

“Probably the only unfortunate thing is Morgan Sanson, who’s come back and, for me, was playing excellently as well.“

The club can also confirm that midfielder John McGinn will be available for selection again this weekend.
