Aston Villa produced a superb performance to beat Leeds United and earn a third consecutive Premier League victory.

Philippe Coutinho’s fourth goal for the club put the away side in front after 22 minutes, with the Brazilian turning home Matty Cash’s pull-back with the aid of a deflection.

The right-back took centre stage when he doubled the lead on 66 minutes, firing home after collecting a superb pass from Danny Ings.

Calum Chambers’ stunning strike put the game to bed after 73 minutes as the defender capped a fine display with his first goal for the club.

Emiliano Martinez faced one shot on target during the 90 minutes as Villa racked up a third straight clean sheet, setting them up perfectly for Sunday’s trip to West Ham United.

Lucas Digne returned to the starting XI after missing the weekend’s win, stepping into a lively atmosphere at Elland Road as the home fans got behind head coach Jesse Marsch in his first home game since replacing Marcelo Bielsa.

And after a cagey start from both sides, the left-back played a part in the move that led to the opening goal after 22 minutes.

Digne combined well with Ings before sending a ball across the face of goal, evading a sliding Ollie Watkins and being collected by Cash on the opposite wing.

The right-back took his time before pulling the ball back for Coutinho, whose shot took a kind deflection off Pascal Struijk and hopped up over Illan Meslier.

The mercurial Brazilian, just as he had been against them at Villa Park last month, was a constant thorn in Leeds’ side, drifting around the pitch and looking to create a second goal.

After 42 minutes, two defenders were drawn to the playmaker as he shaped to shoot, quickly pulling the ball back and feeding John McGinn, who cut onto his right foot before seeing a low drive parried away by Meslier.

Boos rang out from all four sides of the stadium as the whistle went for half-time, with the home fans unimpressed after their side failed to muster a single shot.

The hosts responded by threatening the Villa goal within the first 30 seconds of the second half, with Raphinha bursting into the box and seeing his cut-back superbly cleared by Cash.

Patrick Bamford arrived to a raucous reception amid a spell of Leeds pressure before McGinn tested the goalkeeper as the visitors’ offered a reminder of their threat on the counter-attack.

That threat translated into a second goal on 66 minutes when Cash netted his second goal in three games.

Calum Chambers.

A sumptuous, driven crossfield pass from Ings picked out the full-back, who cut inside a desperate defender before lashing home a left-foot shot.

The second goal killed any positivity left in the stadium, and the supporters were soon chanting Bielsa’s name when Villa’s third hit the back of the net after 73 minutes.

A superb touch from Tyrone Mings allowed him to tee up centre-back partner Chambers on the edge of the box, with the January signing sending a first-time shot curling into the top corner.

The stunning strike capped off a fine evening for Steven Gerrard’s side, who were left to celebrate with the jubilant travelling fans at the final whistle.
