Aston Villa’s three-match winning sequence came to an end after a 2-1 defeat to West Ham United at London Stadium.

Jacob Ramsey struck in the 90th minute to give Villa hope of a point, his sixth of the season, but it was the hosts who triumphed courtesy of two second-half goals.

Hammers substitute Andriy Yarmolenko opened the scoring as he converted a well-taken strike in the 70th minute, with the Ukraine international clearly emotional amid his celebrations.

Pablo Fornals swept home a second for West Ham on the counter-attack prior to the late drama, but Villa could not force an injury-time leveller as their winning run, which had included three consecutive clean sheets, was brought to a halt.

Danny Ings had earlier seen his low strike pushed on to a post by Lukasz Fabianksi, while, at the other end, Emi Martínez thwarted Michael Antonio and Craig Dawson subsequently headed over from close range with the goal at his mercy.

Villa, who went into the Premier League encounter having won three of their last four matches on the road, will now be looking to bounce back at home to Arsenal next weekend.

Steven Gerrard named an unchanged starting line-up, keeping faith with the same XI and matchday 20 who started Thursday night’s 3-0 victory at Leeds United.

Emi Martínez made a comfortable save from Said Benrahma with four minutes on the clock before Fornals flashed a low effort wide.

Villa were forced into a change after just 10 minutes as Lucas Digne hobbled off, to be replaced by Ashley Young.

Philippe Coutinho saw his exquisite flick blocked by Fabianksi after a surging run from Ramsey, before Tomas Soucek headed off target at the near post just before the half-hour mark.

But that was as close as either side came during a low-key first half in the capital.

Coutinho sent a long-range strike wide at the start of the second half as both sides looked for a breakthrough.

The visitors then came closest to doing just that in the 56th minute as Ings saw Fabianski get down low to push his strike from John McGinn’s corner on to the inside of a post before fortuitously collecting the rebound.

It was West Ham’s turn to go close four minutes later as Martínez produced a superb one-handed save to parry Antonio’s header from a corner, before Dawson somehow nodded the rebound over the crossbar from close range with the goal gaping.

Gerrard turned to Leon Bailey in the 69th minute, replacing Ings, but it was the hosts who opened the scoring moments later.

Dawson’s cross-field pass found Benrahma out wide and he played a ball into the penalty area for Yarmolenko, who took a touch with his right foot before quickly sending a left-footed strike beyond Martínez and into the far bottom corner.

Emi Buendía came on for Douglas Luiz as Villa chased an equaliser, before fellow sub Bailey tested Fabianksi from distance in the 81st minute.

But the hosts doubled their advantage shortly afterwards as Declan Rice broke from midfield, fed Benrahma and his low cross was swept home by the onrushing Fornals.

Buendía was denied by Fabianksi late on as Villa pushed for a route back into the game.

And they got it in the 90th minute, Buendía again the architect as he surged into the penalty area before pulling the ball back for Ramsey to slot home.

But Villa could not find a leveller during six minutes of added time as their winless run against the Hammers was extended to eight matches stretching back to 2015.
