Aston Villa Women saw their unbeaten run come to an abrupt end on Sunday afternoon as they lost 7-0 to Arsenal.

The Gunners came flying out of the blocks and were 2-0 up within the opening 12 minutes through a Vivianne Miedema brace.

Matters were made worse when Rachel Corsie turned the ball into her own net on 51 minutes, before Beth Mead, Lotte Wubben-Moy, Stina Blackstenius and Nikita Parris all netted.

The result leaves a disappointing taste in the mouths of the Villa players and staff after a positive few months.

Carla Ward made two changes from the side that picked up an invaluable point against Manchester United last weekend.

Olivia McLoughlin replaced Remi Allen who sadly sustained a ruptured ACL against United, while Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah started in place of Ruesha Littlejohn having impressed from the bench in recent weeks.

Sian Rogers, who retained her place from last weekend, was called into action from the off and immediately denied Miedema from close range.

But the Dutch international was not to be kept out any longer.

Within the opening 12 minutes, Miedema notched twice to put Arsenal into the ascendency early on.

Villa held out until half-time but quickly fell further behind when an Arsenal shot ricocheted off Corsie and ended up in the net.

Mead added a fourth with a long-range rocket, before Wubben-Moy, Blackstenius and Parris all notched in the closing stages.

Attention now turns towards a final-day encounter against Birmingham City at Villa Park.
