Background to pricing increase:
- We have conducted a comprehensive strategic review of our ticket pricing policy over the last 10 years including an up-to-date benchmarking exercise versus all other Premier League clubs.
- Over the past 10 years there has been a relatively flat movement in our pricing for season tickets and match tickets. When comparing this with our competitors, on most measures we have been towards the very bottom of Premier League prices.
- Ahead of the 2022/23 season, in order to align our prices more closely with our Premier League competitors and to help bring our revenues more in line with the costs of competing in the Premier League in keeping with the financial rules, we have decided to increase our prices by 10% across all full adult categories.
- The club is conscious of the rising cost of living and for this reason we have limited these price rises to levels which still keep us in the lower half of Premier League benchmarking. We hope and believe that this balanced approach enables us to keep football at Villa Park affordable while addressing the obvious need for us to be sustainable in the long run as a Premier League competitor.
- During this pricing review we have also taken the opportunity to address some other historical anomalies in our pricing structure, including concessions rates, stadium zoning and game categories. This was with a view to making our pricing simpler and fairer across all fans.
- Currently our concessionary discounts are again some of the highest in the league and mean that in some cases concessions can watch Premier League football at Villa Park for extremely low prices which are out-of-date with football and other comparable leisure activities. We have therefore looked to address this issue with more reasonable levels of discount from adult prices across the board, but with U14s still receiving a 75-80% discount, which means juniors can attend Villa Park from just £6 per game. We have also reviewed our over-65 pricing and have increased the concession age of this category from 65 to 66 in line with government changes to retirement and pension ages, bringing the level of discount to the Premier League average of 35%.
- Our stadium zoning has many obscure legacy areas. Some of the main changes include: removing the single zone 5 area in the Lower North Stand; updating some of the wing zones in the Trinity Road Stand and Holte End; and updating the core of the Lower Holte End.
- With regards to game categories, there is a growing trend of teams only having two tiers of game, A and B. We currently also have C but propose to remove that in line with league standards. This change only impacts match tickets not season tickets.
- These changes are being taken following discussions with our Fan Consultation Group. Following the FCG’s feedback, we have addressed any anomalies where fans may see excessive price increases due to compound effects from concessions, zoning and general pricing. In these cases we have introduced a cap on these fans’ renewal price. They will be contacted directly and their price will be adjusted accordingly when renewing online.
- The club will continue to look at ways to improve the overall fan experience on matchday (currently ranked 5th in the Premier League in the latest Premier League Fan Engagement survey). This includes improvements to catering facilities which has started in some areas with the introduction of bespoke local, independent food traders into our kiosks.
- The redevelopment of Villa Park, recently discussed by CEO Christian Purslow in a video to supporters, looks to address the demand for season tickets, with over 24,000 fans currently on our waiting list. It will also be a catalyst for a much-improved experience and the club has recently engaged with fans on a matchday experience survey as part of the planning for this work.
- We will also be looking once again at methods to help fans pay for their season ticket, with the continuation of our eight-month interest-free payment scheme, subject to acceptance.
