Steven Gerrard felt Aston Villa fell victim to familiar flaws in their 1-1 draw against Burnley on Thursday night.

The head coach saw his side dominate possession (71%), fire 22 shots and force several fine saves from Clarets ‘keeper Nick Pope.

However, Emiliano Buendía was the only Villan to find a way through, cancelling out Ashley Barnes’ penalty, leaving Gerrard to ponder what might have been.

He said: “It was a similar pattern to quite a few games this season where we’re getting in good areas, we’re asking some good questions and managed to score a fantastic goal, but it’s not enough, especially if you’re making individual errors and give a penalty away.

“In these situations, moving forward, we need to be better and show more quality.

“I’m pleased with a lot of our play, we got into some good areas and their ‘keeper’s been on top form tonight.

“I thought we did enough to win the game but I’m disappointed to let two points go again.”

He added: “We threw everything we had at it. We were aggressive with our substitutions at the right times – Danny’s had a big chance, Bertrand’s had a big chance, John McGinn’s had a couple of long-range efforts.

“We had 16,17 efforts tonight and we’ve managed to score one goal, so that’s on us to improve.”

As is customary after the final home game of the season, Villa embarked on a lap of appreciation around the stadium.

Gerrard is extremely grateful for the support he’s had from the stands since joining the club in November, and he says the team must do more to repay them on the pitch.

When asked if the fans have made him feel at home, he replied: “They have but they’ve also given me something to think about because our team has been so inconsistent over the course of the season and they’re still there in their numbers supporting us and cheering us on.

“We need to give them more. We need to come back better and stronger and give this crowd more because they’ve been fantastic with me and us since we came in the door, and so have our away fans.

“Three points left to play for, let’s go and fight for everything and then we’ll reset and come back better and stronger.”
