Steven Gerrard felt Aston Villa missed an opportunity to climb the Premier League table after Monday’s 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest.

Emmanuel Dennis headed the hosts in front before Ashley Young produced a stunning effort to level matters after 22 minutes.

Villa ended the game with three strikers on the pitch as they pushed for a winner, and Gerrard felt the game slipped through their grasp.

Steven Gerrard.

He said: “I feel as if we should have taken three points.

“We had a massive opportunity today to really jump up in the league. That would have felt good if we could have executed it.

“I don’t think there was much wrong with our performance, up to a certain point. Again, I felt like we lacked quality in the final third; we haven’t created enough, and I need to keep challenging certain individuals to step forward and produce moments of magic.

“Ashley Young’s strike was phenomenal. That’s the only real moment of magic we got in the final third, and that’s not enough.”

Having picked up a point at The City Ground, Villa’s unbeaten run stretched to four games.

Aston Villa took on Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Monday night.

But that came as no solace to Gerrard, who is demanding his team start picking up three points more regularly.

“We can change these draws into wins if people step forward and give us moments of magic. That will help us feel a lot better,” he said.

“I don’t want to talk about four games unbeaten because it’s not enough.

“In this game, at a club like Villa, we need wins. We had an opportunity today to win the game and really jump up the league. That’s gone by us.”
