John McGinn spoke of his delight after netting his first goal of the season in Aston Villa’s impressive 2-0 victory at Chelsea on Sunday.

The Villa captain picked the perfect moment to open his account as he doubled our advantage in style at Stamford Bridge, his fierce 20-yard strike putting the Villans firmly on course for all three points in west London.

It capped a fantastic performance from the box-to-box midfielder, who scooped the Player of the Match award.

And, speaking to VillaTV post-match, the Scotland international was happy to secure the victory and get his name on the scoresheet in the process.

“It’s been a long time coming,” he said.

“It’s obviously been bothering me a wee bit and it was in the back of my mind after I scored with Scotland after 19 minutes. I was thinking ‘ah, typical’.

“So, I just thought I’d keep my head down, the amount of times I’ve had shots blocked from the edge of the box trying to lace it.

“I’ve just given it the side-foot, got enough power and thankfully it’s gone in the back of the net, so I’m delighted.”

Chelsea v Aston Villa

The win was Villa’s first away at Chelsea since 2011 and only the club’s second in their last 18 Premier League visits stretching back to 2002.

It ensures Unai Emery’s charges are now unbeaten in five matches, winning four of those, ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Leicester City.

And McGinn poured praised on his Villa team-mates after securing another victory.

“It’s a tough place to come,” he said.

“Since I’ve been here (at Villa), we’ve not won here, but we’ve always played pretty well. So, we were due one.

“We probably didn’t play as well as we can in the first half, but we scored a great goal, and could have scored a couple of others.

“We’re running hard, we’re working hard, we’re sticking together as a team. And even in those bad moments, you don’t really feel anyone is going to let you down. And that’s an amazing feeling.

“We’re on a brilliant run and you just never know what can happen.”
