Aston Villa Women squandered a two-goal lead against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon, drawing 3-3 at Brisbane Road.

Kirsty Hanson and Rachel Daly had put Villa into a seemingly commanding lead inside the opening 21 minutes before Eveliina Summanen pulled one back for the hosts.

Summanen doubled her tally less than a minute into the second half before Bethany England fired Spurs into the lead.

Daly headed home late to salvage a point for Villa who will be disappointed to only take a point home.

Carla Ward made just one change from the side that started our Vitality Women’s FA Cup defeat to Chelsea last weekend.

Alisha Lehmann, having missed a couple of decent chances during the agonising exit, made way for Laura Blindkilde Brown.

Villa started the game well and almost went ahead when Daly volleyed over the bar from a Lucy Staniforth corner.

It wouldn’t take much longer for the deadlock to be broken, though.

Kenza Dali fed the ball to Hanson who took one touch beyond Asmita Ale before slamming the ball into the roof of the net from close range.

The lead was doubled just over 10 minutes later when Daly tapped home from Anna Patten’s header across goal.

But in a frantic first half, Villa’s advantage was immediately halved.

A through-ball resulted in Ashleigh Neville colliding with Hannah Hampton inside the box, but the referee allowed play to go on and Summanen converted into an empty net to hand Spurs a lifeline.

Villa went into the break with a one-goal lead but perhaps should’ve restored their two-goal cushion before the interval.

A flowing move saw Jordan Nobbs slip a ball beyond the defence towards Hanson who was thwarted by Becky Spencer.

That missed opportunity was capitalised with Spurs’ first attack of the second half as Summanen bagged her second of the afternoon so bring the home side all the way back.

Ward didn’t waste much more time before making her first change of the afternoon; Lehmann coming on in place of Blindkilde Brown on the right wing.

But no sooner had the Switzerland international entered the fray, Spurs scored another to put themselves in the lead.

This time it was Beth England, Spurs’ sole scorer in the reverse fixture.

The striker found herself in the right place at the right time to bundle past Hampton and cue delirium from the home support.

Villa did continue to fashion chances of their own and almost equalised when Lehmann turned an effort inches wide from point blank range.

Despite an overall subpar performance from the visiting Villans, they didn't say die and salvaged a point when Daly powered home a close-range header with three minutes left to play.

The result ensured a short two-game losing run was arrested, but Villa will know improvements are to be required ahead of a crunch game against Manchester United next weekend.
