Daphne van Domselaar and the Netherlands beat South Africa 2-0 to progress to the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women's World Cup on Sunday morning.

Manchester City's Jill Roord headed home the opening goal of the game, before Juventus' Lineth Beerensteyn sealed the victory with a fortuitous strike in the second half.

van Domselaar produced a string of key saves at the other end to see the Oranje through to the final eight.

The opening goal of the game started with PSV’s Esmee Brugts, whose ambitious effort from an acute angle was pushed over the bar by South Africa’s goalkeeper.

But from the resulting corner, Roord was able to head home from close range to give the Oranje a perfect start.

South Africa still posed a dangerous threat at the other end, though.

A quick counter attack led to Daphne tipping a shot from Racing Louisville’s Thembi Kgatlana away from danger.

As the first half wore on, chances continued to come for both sides and Lyon’s Daniëlle van de Donk missed a good opportunity to double the Netherlands’ lead.

van Domselaar was forced into another save form Kgatlana 10 minutes before the break as the South Africans’ threat in transition continued to cause problems.

Kgatlana made it a hat-trick of misses in first-half stoppage time, this time being thwarted by van Domselaar from point-blank range.

And our new number one would astonishingly deny Kgatlana one more time before the referee’s whistle.

The Netherlands started the second half with the intention of putting the tie to bed, and it looked as though they were on their way to doing that when Arsenal’s Victoria Pelova bundled the ball home from close range.

But the effort was ruled out for offside and the game was finely poised going into the final 30 minutes.

Beerensteyn, however, put any tensions to rest on 68 minutes when her attempt was mishandled by the South African goalkeeper; leaving the ball to roll into then net.

Daphne saved her best save until last, getting a the finest of touches to a South Africa strike to tip the ball around her post when sprawling down to her left-hand side.

Daphne and co. will come up against Spain in their quarter-final matchup on Friday morning.
