John McGinn is keen to ensure Aston Villa move on quickly from Saturday’s defeat against Newcastle United.

A hard-fought match got away from the visitors in the second half and ensured the Premier League season began with a loss.

Captain McGinn was defiant in his post-match interview and says the team will bounce back swiftly.

John McGinn.

“Since the manager’s come in, it’s been pretty plain sailing,” the midfielder said.

“We’ve had a couple of bumps and bruises, this will hurt a little bit more because of the scoreline. Newcastle do this to a lot of teams here.

“We’ve got to make sure that, with 37 games to go this season, we don’t let this drop our heads.

“We had a really good pre-season and we can’t forget all the work that we’ve put in because we’ve put in a lot of work to be successful this season.

“We need to make sure this is a blip – it’s so important we do that.”

Aston Villa took on Newcastle United in their Premier League opener on Saturday.

A significant injury to Tyrone Mings rubbed salt into the wounds during a tough day on Tyneside.

Although, a sparkling, goalscoring debut from summer signing Moussa Diaby was a positive, and McGinn believes he’ll thrive in claret and blue.

The Scotsman reflected: “It was a great goal.

“He’s always a threat on the break. He’s really humble, hard-working and he’s improved us already.

“He’ll be glad to get off the mark.”
