Aston Villa will assess Emi Martínez ahead of Sunday’s Premier League trip to Burnley.

The Villa goalkeeper and World Cup winner was substituted at half-time in Wednesday’s 5-0 Europa Conference League play-off victory at Hibernian.

Martínez is suffering with a minor calf complaint and faces a late fitness test before our clash against the Clarets at Turf Moor.

However, summer signing Nicolò Zaniolo is in contention to make his Villa debut this weekend having been unable to face Hibs due to UEFA regulations.

Unai Emery, speaking at Friday’s pre-match media briefing, said: “Today he (Emi) didn’t train and we’re going to wait for tomorrow.

“He has small pain in his calf, it’s not big, but we have to take our time.

“Tomorrow is our last training for Sunday’s match and it is the day to take a decision if he is going to be ready or not.”

Asked about Zaniolo, Emery added: “He is ready to play on Sunday.

“His first match, he didn’t have the right permission, he couldn’t play in Europe now and the two matches against Hibernian.”
