Aston Villa reached the Women's FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday with a thrilling penalty shoot-out victory over West Ham United.

Rachel Daly opened the scoring just after the break, but Dagny Brynjarsdottir levelled in second-half stoppage time as the game ended 1-1 after 90 and then 120 minutes.

In a dramatic shoot-out, Hampton hammered her spot-kick into the net to hand Villa the advantage in sudden death, and the game was won when West Ham goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold fired over the crossbar to spark wild scenes of celebration.

Brynjarsdottir was first to go close in the contest, as her first-time effort from inside the box was comfortably saved and held by Hannah Hampton.

Jordan Nobbs and Kenza Dali were having plenty of touches in the middle of the park and the former set up a chance for Daly midway through the half with a beautifully-flighted ball over the top, but Arnold was off her line quickly to end the danger.

Kirsty Hanson looked lively on the left-hand side and she saw an effort saved before Maz Pacheco fired wide of the post from distance.

Villa then had the best chance of the half just after the half-hour mark, as Danielle Turner's header from a set piece came back off the post before being held by Arnold.

The visitors carried their momentum into the second half and took the lead just five minutes after the break, when Dali raced into the area and squared for Daly to tap home from close range.

Carla Ward's side continued to threaten with Dali and Daly combining again moments later, but the latter poked her shot inches wide of the target.

Hanson then had a shot blocked before Dali saw a long-range effort saved as Villa looked to capitalise on a dominant start to the second half.

The home side then began to push for a route back into the game and Hampton stood firm to thwart Amalie Thestrup, with Turner displaying exceptional pace soon after to recover and make a crucial challenge on the West Ham forward, who was through on goal.

Dali found space for another attempt as the game moved into the final 10 minutes, but once again, Arnold was equal to it.

West Ham continued to apply the pressure and they found an equaliser in added time, with Bryjarsdottir bundling home from close range.

Substitute Emily Gielnik went closest for Villa in the first half of extra time, but her curling effort was saved and then held, with Arnold under pressure from Laura Blindkilde-Brown.

With both sides unable to find a winner, a penalty shoot-out was up next.

Sarah Mayling, Lucy Staniforth, Gielnik, Pacheco, Freya Gregory, Rachel Corsie and Hampton all converted, with Villa's place in the quarter-finals confirmed when Arnold fired over the crossbar with West Ham's eighth spot-kick.
