Emi Buendía celebrated the perfect way to start 2023 as Villa triumphed 2-0 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Argentinian opened the scoring early in the second half in north London, receiving the ball from Ollie Watkins to slam home his second goal of the season.

Douglas Luiz then added another well-worked goal for the Villans to wrap up an impressive three points on New Year’s Day.

Buendía told VillaTV: “It’s an unbelievable feeling to win away in a difficult game, showing that character from everyone in the team.

“We’re very happy.”

Buendía’s second strike of the campaign came after his winner against Everton in mid-August.

The attacking midfielder scored four and claimed six assists in the Premier League last season, and he’s keen to increase that tally this term.

“It’s something I have to improve and I try to arrive more in the opponents’ box,” he added.

“So, here, I followed Ollie and he followed the rebound very well, I was behind him. He passed to me and I could score.

“I’m really happy to help the team and, with the win, it’s an unbelievable feeling to start 2023.”

Victory ensured the Villans have now won three of their first four league matches under head coach Unai Emery.

It was also their first clean sheet under the Spaniard since he took charge.

Villa will be looking to continue that form in B6 when midlands neighbours Wolves visit Villa Park on Wednesday.

“Now we have to translate this performance to home,” said Buendía.

“At Villa Park we feel the difference with our fans, with our supporters, we feel we put more pressure on opponents.

“And hopefully in our next game we are capable of getting three points again."
