John McGinn will continue to shine at Aston Villa after putting pen-to-paper on a new contract until 2027.

The 28-year-old has played a key role in the club’s progression from the Championship to a top-seven finish in the Premier League.

Below, we remember some of his best moments in a Villa shirt so far…

Venomous Volley

Many Villa fans will have McGinn’s first goal for the club down as their favourite-ever Villa Park goal – it was that good!

Executing textbook technique, the Scot made the sweetest connection with the ball as it dropped to him 25 yards from goal.

Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson might as well have stood and applauded as he could get nowhere near a shot that cannoned off the crossbar and in.

The Holte End went wild as McGinn helped to further his burgeoning reputation following his move from Hibernian.

Wembley Winner

John McGinn was named Man of the Match in the Championship play-off final.

Villa fans held a collective breath as Anwar El Ghazi’s shot looped up off a defender and into the penalty area during the Championship play-off final.

Derby goalkeeper Kelle Roos appeared the favourite to come and collect the ball, but he hadn’t accounted for the determination of McGinn.

The midfielder challenged the ‘keeper and got his head to the ball to make it 2-0.

It proved to be the winner as Villa made it back to the big time.

Stepping Up

McGinn picked up where he left off at Wembley, bagging a goal on his Premier League debut.

He raced on to Tyrone Mings’ long ball and kept his composure before firing past Hugo Lloris.

As well as being a big moment for McGinn, it was the club’s first goal in the top flight for over three years following a prolonged spell in the second tier.

Palace Pearler

The celebration was as good as the goal when McGinn netted what proved to be the winner against Crystal Palace in November 2021.

After curling in a beauty from the edge of the box, the Scotsman ran off using his hands as goggles – a celebration that had been seen on the international stage with his country.

The strike was later nominated for Premier League Goal of the Month, while McGinn also earned a Player of the Month nomination.

Next Stop: Europe

John McGinn.

McGinn hit a rich vein of form during this season's run-in, driving Villa forward with a string of impressive performances.

And it was no surprise when he delivered another strong display on the final day of the season against Brighton as Villa secured European football for the first time since 2010.

Having been with the club since the Championship, it was fitting that McGinn was the man to secure the win by shielding the ball near the corner flag, promptly celebrating in front of the Holte End when the final whistle went.
