Aston Villa saw off Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 to record a sixth successive home win in the Premier League for the first time since 1993.

Jacob Ramsey set Villa on their way with his fifth goal of the season in the eighth minute, a richly deserved lead for the hosts following a dominant first-half display.

Douglas Luiz then curled home a 25-yard free-kick in the second period, only for Harry Kane to convert an 89th-minute penalty – the first goal conceded at Villa Park since mid-February.

But the Villans stood firm to wrap up all three points, Heung-Min Son finding the net in injury time before being flagged offside in what was a dramatic finale.

Victory moves Unai Emery’s side up to seventh in the table, level on points with Spurs, and guarantees a first top-10 finish in 12 years.

Emi Buendía clipped the crossbar for the home side while Emi Martínez made a stunning save to deny Kane in the second half during what was an enthralling encounter.

The deserved triumph represents the first time Villa have completed a league double over Spurs since 1995/96, recording only a second league win over the north London club on home soil in the last 15 attempts.

Fit-again Leon Bailey returned to Villa’s starting line-up for the first time since hobbling out of April’s 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest.

Bailey replaced Bertrand Traoré, who was named among the substitutes alongside the returning Matty Cash, as Villa showed one change from last weekend’s defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

And the Jamaica international claimed an assist within the opening eight minutes.

Ollie Watkins’ neat flick in the middle of the park found Ramsey, who sprayed the ball out wide to Bailey and he burst into the penalty area before sliding across for Ramsey to tuck home at the near post.

It was an open and engaging encounter as the first half flowed, Son racing clean through, rounding Martínez and hitting a post from a tight angle in the 25th minute, only for the offside flag to be raised.

Bailey forced a superb low save from Fraser Forster just after the half-hour mark, connecting with Watkins’ cross.

Watkins himself came within inches of heading home Álex Moreno’s vicious left-wing cross to add a second before the break.

Before Buendía then came even closer as he sent Ramsey’s pass against the crossbar, with Villa holding a slender lead at the interval.

The hosts continued where they left off at the start of the second half, Ashley Young and commanding captain John McGinn both trying their luck from distance, while Buendía called Forster into action.

Yet Villa were indebted to Martínez in the 52nd minute for standing strong and making a superb save to deny Kane after the visitors won possession in a dangerous area.

Son was again flagged offside having been sent clear and firing over the crossbar, before Spurs substitute Dejan Kulusevski curled narrowly wide.

With Tottenham gaining a foothold, head coach Emery brought on Boubacar Kamara and Jhon Durán midway through the second period.

And it paid almost instant dividends as Luiz curled a 25-yard free-kick over the wall and into the net, despite the best efforts of Forster.

Villa were given a late scare when Spurs were awarded a penalty following Martínez’s foul on Kane, the England skipper converting from the spot.

But Emery’s side remained resolute, Son’s added-time effort ruled out, to record a 17th top-flight triumph, our highest tally since 2009/10.
