In the aftermath of Sunday’s win at Villa Park, John McGinn hailed a special day in Aston Villa’s history.

The midfielder’s fifth season at the club ended with European qualification, capping a remarkable personal journey that began in the Championship.

And following the final day victory against Brighton & Hove Albion, McGinn was delighted with the outcome.

John McGinn.

“It means a lot,” he said.

“Obviously I was here when we failed to get promoted and then the owners came in. They had a plan and an ambition to get this club back to where it belongs.

“We’ve obviously done it the hard way but it’s a special day.

“The club’s got no ceiling. There’s a long waiting list for Season Tickets and everyone wants to be a part of Aston Villa.”

Aston Villa embarked on a Lap of Appreciation after the game.

McGinn has thrived under the guidance of head coach Unai Emery, and he hailed the Spaniard’s influence.

When asked about Emery’s impact, he said: “Unbelievable. He’s a bit mad but he’s brilliant.

“We’ve all enjoyed working with him, and hopefully he’ll stay for the next few years and we can create more special memories.”
