Aston Villa Women fell to a second consecutive defeat on Sunday evening, losing 2-0 to Liverpool at Prenton Park.

Marie Höbinger and Tash Flint scored either side of half-time to conflict the defeat on Carla Ward's side.

Jordan Nobbs came closest to scoring for Villa but saw her goal-bound effot cleared off the line spectacularly by Emma Koivisto.

Villa now head into a trip to Arsenal next weekend searching for their first points of the season.

Ward made two changes from the side that started last weekend’s agonising defeat to Manchester United at Villa Park.

One of those alterations was enforced; with the suspended Kirsty Hanson being replaced by Adriana Leon.

It would be the Canadian’s first start for the club, and her 50th appearance in the Barclays WSL.

Jordan Nobbs also came into the side for Laura Blindkilde Brown.

Liverpool started quickly once the action was underway and went close when Missy Bo Kearns’ attempted back heel went just wide of Daphne van Domselaar’s post.

Emma Koivisto then sent an effort wide of the mark after good work on the left-hand side from captain Taylor Hinds.

Villa dealt well with the early pressure and began to venture into their opponent’s third as the half wore on.

Rachel Daly will have wanted to do better with a free header from an inviting Sarah Mayling cross, but the striker glanced wide of the target.

Liverpool, however, would score with their next attack.

Marie Hobinger, making her home debut in the red of the Merseyside club, passed the ball emphatically into the top corner after composing herself inside the 18-yard box.

Van Domselaar then came to Villa’s rescue, beating away a Yana Daniels effort to keep the deficit at one.

Hinds fired an effort into the side netting soon after as Villa became dangerously close to losing control of the game.

Villa fought back, though, and should’ve been level when Jordan Nobbs’ goal-bound effort was headed off the line miraculously by Koivisto.

Anna Patten then saw a close-range attempt from the ensuing corner saved by Rachel Laws as frustration built.

Villa went into the break a goal behind and Ward wasted no more time in switching things up.

Ebony Salmon replaced Alisha Lehmann after the Switzerland international struggled to impose herself on proceedings during the opening 45 minutes.

Salmon had half a chance early on in the second period, but Villa struggled to come close to an equaliser from there on in.

Blindkilde Brown and the returning Maz Pacheco entered the fray on the hour mark in Ward’s final roll of the dice, but Liverpool managed the remainder of the game with relative comfort.

They even managed to score a second to put the game beyond doubt, as Flint buried an effort past van Domselaar after turning inside the area.
