There were contrasting emotions for some of Aston Villa’s internationals on Thursday night and Friday morning.

Emi Martínez was unbeatable once again for Argentina as the world champions beat Paraguay 1-0 in World Cup qualifying.

The goalkeeper kept his seventh consecutive clean sheet for his country as they moved top of Group A, setting a national team record after going 622 minutes without conceding.

Elsewhere in South American qualifying, Jhon Duran was an unused substitute as Colombia played out a 2-2 draw with Uruguay.

Leon Bailey came on for the final 25 minutes as Jamaica thrashed Grenada 4-1.

The result saw the Reggae Boyz qualify for the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Nations League.

John McGinn’s Scotland suffered their first defeat of European Championship qualifying against Pau Torres’ Spain.

The midfielder played the whole game as the Scots went down 2-0 in Sevilla, while Torres was an unused substitute.

McGinn took the captain’s armband after Andy Robertson went off injured in the first half.

Scotland remain top of Group A, three points ahead of Spain who have a game in hand.

There was triumph for Matty Cash’s Poland in Group E as they overcame Faroe Islands 2-0.

The full-back played 59 minutes before he was substituted.
