At A Glance

Aston Villa are hunting a 12th consecutive home win in the Premier League when Luton Town visit Villa Park on Sunday.

The team’s tremendous run in the top flight has seen them win their last 11 home tilts by an aggregate scoreline of 31-5 following last Sunday’s 4-1 triumph against West Ham United.

And Villa’s fine form has carried over into the Europa Conference League, with Unai Emery’s side beating AZ Alkmaar 4-1 in the Netherlands on Thursday night.

Former Villan Rob Edwards brings his Luton Town side to B6 after picking up five points from their opening nine league matches.

The Hatters’ sole win came on the road against Everton in September, while they picked up a point at the City Ground last time out, drawing 2-2 with Nottingham Forest.

Carlton Morris has proven to be their main goal threat, netting three times thus far.

Standout Stats

This is the first meeting since Luton Town beat Aston Villa 3-1 in the League Cup first round in August 2016.

The last time the sides met at Villa Park was in a League Cup second-round tie in October 2002, when Dion Dublin scored twice in a 3-0 home win.

Aston Villa v West Ham United

This will be the first league encounter since April 1992, when the Hatters won 2-0 in their penultimate game of their most recent season in the top flight.

Luton have lost six of their last seven away games versus Villa in all competitions.

Aston Villa have earned 11 successive home league wins for the first time since a run of 13 in 1983. They have scored 31 goals and conceded just five in those victories.

Luton manager Rob Edwards made 10 Premier League appearances as a player with the first eight coming for Aston Villa in 2002-03. The other two were for Blackpool in 2010-11, which included a 3-2 defeat at Villa Park.

Villa have been victorious in 19 Premier League games in 2023 - the only calendar years in which they have fared better are 1998 and 1993, with 21 and 20 wins respectively.

A draw would see Luton equal the total of five away points they managed across the whole of their last season in the top flight in 1991-92.

Villa are aiming to win more than six of their opening 10 matches in a top-flight season for the first time since claiming seven victories in 1951-52.

Aston Villa v West Ham United

The Hatters have only led for a total of 66 minutes in the league this season, all of which came in their win at Everton.

Villa’s tally of 19 points is their highest after nine games of a Premier League campaign for 25 years.

Six of Town’s eight league goals this season have been scored in the second half, with five of those coming in the final 10 minutes of matches.

The Villans have won 68 points since Unai Emery's first Premier League fixture in charge - only Manchester City (78), Arsenal (74) and Liverpool (71) have more in that time.

Luton are the first Premier League debutant to fail to keep a clean sheet in their opening nine matches in the competition since Bolton in 1995.

Villa have scored three goals or more in each of their opening four home league matches of a season for the first time since 1920.

Villa have netted 17 times in those four home matches, a figure bettered only by Manchester City in Premier League history (City scored 18 in their first four fixtures at the Etihad in 2017-18 and 20 last season).

The Last Meeting

Villa ventured to Kenilworth Road on their last meeting with Luton Town, taking on the Hatters in the first round of the League Cup.

The recently relegated Villans went ahead via Jordan Ayew after 13 minutes but that was as good as it would get on the night.

Jake Gray, Cameron McGeehan and a Jores Okore own goal put the League Two team through to the next round.

Team News

Álex Moreno

Jacob Ramsey, Alex Moreno and long-term absentees Tyrone Mings and Emi Buendia are sidelined.

Reece Burke will miss out after picking up a hamstring injury in Luton's last outing.

Mads Andersen, Amari'i Bell, Jordan Clark, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Dan Potts have been ruled out.

The Boss

“I respect them a lot. I watched the match against Everton and the draw last week at Nottingham Forest after they were losing 2-0. Their reaction was amazing. We have to analyse deeply and prepare our game plan, adapting to them and respecting them. Then we have to impose our idea and try find their weakness with our capacity to build our structure offensively.”
