Reigning champions Aston Villa bowed out of the Birmingham Senior Cup in the quarter-finals following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Burton Albion.

Substitute Zac Scutt settled a closely-fought encounter in the 76th minute, firing home from 12 yards after Lander Emery had made a superb double save to thwart the visitors.

It proved the difference in an evenly-matched affair which saw Omar Khedr curl a 20-yard effort against the woodwork in the first half at Bodymoor Heath.

The Young Lions pushed for a late leveller but saw the defence of the title they won last year come to an end, as the Brewers progressed to face Racing Club Warwick in the semi-finals.

Defeat came just 24 hours after the club’s Under-18s booked their place in the final of the FA Youth Cup following a dramatic victory over Manchester United at Villa Park.

Josep Gombau's Under-21s booked their place in the last eight with victories over Romulus in the second round and Sutton Coldfield Town in the third round, setting up a showdown with the Brewers.

Kortney Hause returned to the heart of defence for Villa while striker Rory Wilson was also included in the matchday 16.

Thierry Katsukunya spurned an early headed opportunity for the hosts before clear-cut chances became few and far between as both sides battled for supremacy.

Villa were next to go close just before the half-hour mark as Hause’s ball over the top was neatly controlled by Charlie Pavey but I-Lani Edwards couldn’t apply the finish.

Kane Taylor came to the home side’s rescue shortly afterwards as he got a crucial touch to Josh Taroni’s teasing low ball into the box, meaning Kye Bilton’s far-post finish flew narrowly wide.

Khedr sent a 20-yard strike against the far post in the 37th minute before Bilton fired into the side-netting at the other end, with the clash goalless at the interval.

Nile Timson replaced Hause at the break, with Edwards almost scrambling home an opener at the start of the second half.

Wilson was introduced just after the hour mark as Villa continued to search for the breakthrough, while goalkeeper Emery had to be alert to deny Albion sub Scutt at the other end.

And, with little to separate the two sides, it was the visitors who struck first with 14 minutes remaining.

Emery did well to save from Kiarhys Svarc and then Scutt before the latter fired home the rebound from 12 yards.

Wilson sent an effort off target before Pavey couldn’t quite convert at the far post as Villa’s defence of the Birmingham Senior Cup came to an end.
