On his time as PSG manager…

“I spent two years here and I’m always thankful for the experiences I had here. Everything I did before is in my past and helped transform me into the coach I am now.

“I’m feeling good, it’s the first time I’m coming back here in Paris and the Parc des Princes. It’s something special for me.

“I’m very proud of how I am coming back here, playing in the Champions League with Aston Villa and trying to enjoy this quarter-final.”

On Aston Villa’s progress…

Aston Villa 3-0 Club Brugge (6-1 agg)

“Aston Villa is an historic club in the world. They won the European Cup in 1982 and it’s something very special in football – the recognition of Aston Villa is massive.

“When I arrived here two and a half years ago, I knew this history. The challenge in that moment was to be a contender for trophies, to play in Europe again and to play in the Champions League, which would be amazing.

“To keep it consistently is the next challenge. To be playing in Paris in the Champions League quarter-final is something really special and amazing for the everybody involved with Aston Villa, but we want to be consistently doing it.

“Tomorrow we are facing PSG after they beat Liverpool, who were the favourites before because they were doing the best way in this Champions League, and they beat them playing fantastic football and deserving it.

“Now with Real Madrid, with Bayern Munich, with Barcelona, PSG are favourites. How we are facing them and showing our capacity, how we are responding to the tactical demands and individual players they have is really a huge challenge for me and the players.

“We are feeling confident. We are feeling comfortable in this competition. Tomorrow, my objective is to compete, to have our opportunities and to enjoy the way we are doing.”

On Marcus Rashford…

Brighton v Aston Villa, Marcus Rashford.

“He’s a good guy, he’s humble, he’s a very good professional player. He’s really happy with his teammates and he’s being demanding with himself with everything that we want from him in the team.

“I think he’s playing free and comfortable, and this is the most important thing. It’s important to connect with him as a person firstly and after it to connect with him as a player.

“His process here is getting better. He’s playing in two different positions – he started here as a left winger and now he’s playing as more of a striker. How he can exploit his qualities as best as possible with us is the process we have.

“There’s still more to do and there’s still a process to do, but the most important is how he’s feeling. We’re seeing him smiling, which is the best view we can have. I’m seeing him happy and committed to everything we are doing.”

On facing Luis Enrique…

Luis Enrique.

“He’s one of the best coaches in the world and he’s showing it. Not only in Barcelona, he’s showing it in PSG, he’s showing it with the Spanish national team and he showed it as well in Celta Vigo and Barcelona Under-21s.

“I faced him a lot of times and always it’s tactically difficult to defend them and to impose or dominate with our tactical idea because he’s very demanding with how he’s creating and building his team.

“They are very good in the press with the players they have. They are keeping ball possession and being so, so aggressive and intense in each action they are doing in all of the field.

“Tomorrow is a challenge, but it’s a challenge like before because we want to compete and be protagonists on the field. It’s not an individual challenge with him. I appreciate him a lot, I respect him a lot and I will be grateful to see him.

“Other coaches can always learn from something that he’s doing. Tomorrow I will enjoy playing football with two good teams in the Champions League.

“Hopefully we can watch a very good match with very good players, doing our best for Aston Villa.”
