Aston Villa will compete in the Champions League round of 16 in March after an impressive league phase campaign saw them finish eighth in the table with a record of five victories, one draw and just two defeats.

From Youri Tielemans' goal in Bern against BSC Young Boys opening up the European campaign to a historic night under the lights at Villa Park against Bayern Munich and Morgan Rogers' sensational hat-trick against Celtic, the league phase was filled with incredible memories for Villans both near and far, as a tally of 16 points meant Unai Emery's side would skip the round of 32 play-offs on their way straight to the second knockout stage.

And, with a two-legged last 16 tie just around the corner next month, we are counting down the top five moments of the league phase - as voted for by you, the Aston Villa supporters after we drew up an initial shortlist shortly after the conclusion of the league phase

At number four is John McGinn's free-kick to open the scoring against Bologna at Villa Park on Matchday Three...

Emery's side had made a perfect start to their European campaign heading into their third outing.

An emphatic 3-0 victory over Young Boys in September was followed up by a memorable, historic night at Villa Park against Bayern Munich at the beginning of October.

Later that month, the Villans welcomed Italian outfit Bologna to B6, looking for a third-straight win and clean sheet in the competition, and again, the evening did not disappoint.

Emery's men were frustrated throughout the opening period under the lights, as I Rossoblù stood firm against their advances. But the game opened up in the second period and the hosts found a way.

Ezri Konsa won Villa a free-kick on the right-hand side of the area, and McGinn stood over it, poised to swing the ball into the area.

The skipper stepped up and sent the ball in, evading everyone and bouncing into the far corner, to the delight of The Holte Enders behind the goal. Within 10 minutes of the restart, their side had the lead, and had gone in front for the third Champions League game running, as Ginny peeled away and pulled out his trademark goggles celebration before the adoring supporters.

Just nine minutes later, the Villans had doubled their advantage, as Jhon Durán flicked Morgan Rogers' ball into the middle into the far corner to send the home fans into delirium.

The hosts saw out the remainder of the affair to record a third-straight Champions League win, becoming the first side in this season's competition to do so and taking them to the top of the league phase table.

The significance of the achievement was put into sharper focus by the fact we became only the third side since the competition’s rebrand in 1992/93 to triumph in their opening three outings without conceding, after Málaga in 2012/13 and Leicester City in 2016/17, while equalling our longest streak of victories in the European Cup/Champions League, last stringing together three-consecutive wins back in 1981 on our way to lifting the famous trophy.

Another memorable evening under the Villa Park lights, and a truly special moment for John McGinn, who netted his first goal in the competition, to complete the Championship to Champions League circle.
