Marco Asensio expressed his delight at helping to send Aston Villa into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

The Spaniard’s second-half brace finally got the better of a resilient Cardiff City side at Villa Park as the hosts recorded a 2-0 success.

It’s the first time the Villans have progressed to the last eight of the competition since 2015.

"We are really happy,” said Asensio.

“It was not an easy game, we knew it was a difficult game.

“(I'm) very happy for the goals, for the win, we're in the next round, that's the most important.”

Asensio’s double takes his tally to four goals in six matches since joining the club, with all of those coming in his last two outings in B6.

Three of those four goals have come via assists from fellow loanee Marcus Rashford.

And the attacking midfielder is enjoying life in claret and blue.

"I'm very happy with my team-mates, with the staff, they give me a lot of confidence, so I try to do my best on the pitch and it's going well,” he said.

“I want to score more to give more to this team, to this club and that’s my objective.”

On Rashford, Asensio added: "Marcus is a top player. We are together not so long but I know what he wants to do, where he passes and I am very happy to have Marcus and all of my team-mates.

“We have a good level for trying to do big things this season, that’s the objective.”

Victory extends Villa’s unbeaten home run in all competitions to 15 matches stretching back to October.

Unai Emery’s side will now turn their focus towards Tuesday’s first leg of their UEFA Champions League last 16 tie against Club Brugge in Belgium.

"We have to keep pushing, we are in the right way,” added Asensio.

“Next step is Champions League and now the focus is there."
