By Aston Villa FC

Aston Villa have a rich history in the FA Cup and a strong association with the world’s oldest domestic cup competition.

Villa are seven-times winners, the joint-sixth highest tally of any club, and have appeared in a total of 11 finals.

Our first FA Cup success came in 1887 while our most recent was 68 years ago, with the club losing finalists in 2000 and 2015.

Villa will participate in their first quarter-final for 10 years on Sunday as Unai Emery's side make the trip to Deepdale to face Preston North End.

It will be the club’s fourth appearance in the last eight of the competition since the turn of the century.

Here, we take a look back at the previous three…

2015 – Aston Villa 2-0 West Bromwich Albion (Villa Park)

Villa’s most recent FA Cup quarter-final appearance came in 2015 against midlands neighbours West Bromwich Albion.

Fabian Delph opened the scoring in the 51st minute before Scott Sinclair added a second in the latter stages of a dramatic night at Villa Park.

Jack Grealish and Claudio Yacob each saw red late on in a fiery encounter as Villa, under Tim Sherwood, secured their place in the semi-finals and a first trip to Wembley for five years.

The Villans went on to seal a memorable 2-1 triumph over Liverpool before falling to a 4-0 defeat to Arsenal in the final.

2010 – Reading 2-4 Aston Villa (Madejski Stadium)

John Carew

Villa produced a stunning second-half comeback to see off Reading thanks to John Carew’s hat-trick.

The Royals led 2-0 at the interval courtesy of Shane Long’s brace, with Villa seemingly heading for a quarter-final exit on the back of our Carling Cup final defeat just the week previous.

But Ashley Young gave the visitors hope shortly after the restart, before Carew’s treble, including two goals in six minutes, fired the Villans back to Wembley under Martin O’Neill.

However, Villa’s FA Cup journey ended in the semi-finals as they were undone 3-0 by Chelsea.

2000 – Everton 1-2 Aston Villa (Goodison Park)

Mark Delaney and Ugo Ehiogu

John Gregory’s side saw off the Toffees and booked their place at Wembley thanks to goals from Steve Stone and Benito Carbone.

Stone headed the visitors in front at Goodison Park in the 16th minute before Joe-Max Moore levelled for the Toffees shortly afterwards.

But Carbone had the final say just before half-time as he converted from close range, netting what turned out to be the winner before seeing red late on for a second bookable offence.

Villa went on to triumph on penalties over Bolton Wanderers in the semi-finals before an agonising 1-0 defeat to Chelsea in the last-ever FA Cup final played at the old Wembley.
